In August 2025, the UK's total order book balance experienced a decline, reaching -33, down from -30 in July and falling short of the anticipated -28, according to the CBI Industrial Trends Survey. Manufacturing output saw a significant drop in the quarter leading to August, following a generally stable performance in July, with projections indicating further downturns until November. Both total and export order books were noted to be below their "normal" levels and historical averages, while the inventory of finished goods remained sufficient yet below long-term standards. Price inflation expectations decreased to +9%, the lowest since October 2024. Of the 17 manufacturing sub-sectors, 14 experienced reductions in output, particularly in chemicals, paper, printing and media, and metal products. CBI Lead Economist Ben Jones pointed out that escalating costs, cautious consumer behavior, sluggish demand, trade disruptions, and policy uncertainty are challenging profit margins and order volumes. He stressed the importance of the upcoming Autumn Budget in reviving business confidence by providing tax stability, energy cost assistance, and implementing industrial strategies.
