The downturn is predominantly attributed to the imposition of hefty 39% American tariffs on Swiss exports imposed earlier in the month. Given that the United States constitutes approximately 17% of Switzerland’s export market, these tariffs have substantial implications. Analysts foresee a notable deceleration in Swiss export activities over the forthcoming six months, as reflected by the export sentiment sub-index, which plummeted from -35.1 to a staggering -89.8, significantly impacting overall investor confidence. Concurrently, the index measuring current conditions slipped to a neutral zero, decreased from 9.5 in July, underscoring a more restrained outlook on the present economic climate.
