India's BSE Sensex advanced by approximately 0.4% to close at 81,635.9 on Monday, rebounding after the previous session's decline. This upward movement was driven by robust buying in leading IT companies and sustained strength across key sectors. Globally, market sentiment improved following comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the Jackson Hole summit in Wyoming on Friday, where he expressed a willingness to consider rate cuts. Domestically, optimism surrounding the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) rationalization—which is anticipated to boost consumption—also contributed to the market's positive performance. However, there are ongoing concerns regarding the United States' plan to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 27, which will bring total duties to 50%. Among the top performers, Infosys, TCS, and HCL Technologies each witnessed gains of about 3%. Conversely, the biggest decliners included Bharat Electronics, which fell 0.7%, followed by Asian Paints and Bharti Airtel, both down 0.4%, and ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, which saw declines of 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.
