In August 2025, the University of Michigan reported a decline in consumer sentiment for the United States, with the index falling to 58.2 from the previous month's five-month high of 61.7. This figure was adjusted down from a preliminary estimate of 58.6 and significantly below the market's initial expectations of 62. This marks the first decline in consumer sentiment in four months, primarily driven by escalating concerns over inflation and significantly poorer conditions for purchasing durable goods, reaching their lowest point in a year. Further compounding the issue, expectations regarding overall business conditions and the outlook for the U.S. labor market have worsened, although perceptions of personal finances remained relatively stable. Moreover, inflation expectations for the coming year increased by 0.3 percentage points to 4.8%, a trend consistent with previous hikes this year following the implementation of aggressive tariffs on key trading partners.
