Household consumption in the Netherlands experienced a 1.1% increase on a year-on-year basis in August 2025, marking a deceleration from July's 1.3% rise. This deceleration was primarily attributed to a more modest increase in the consumption of goods, which grew by 0.7% compared to 1.1% in July. The slower pace was evident in the spending on durable consumer goods, which increased by 1.9% as opposed to 3.4% the previous month. However, there was a minor recovery in the consumption of food, beverages, and tobacco, which edged up by 0.3% after a decline of 1.3% in July. On the other hand, the growth in services consumption remained steady at 1.4%, largely fueled by expenditures on transport, communication, and hospitality. Notably, spending on services constitutes more than half of the total household consumption expenditure. The September Consumption Radar, which evaluates critical factors affecting household spending, indicated marginally improved conditions compared to August, driven by enhanced consumer confidence and better employment prospects.
