New Zealand is set to launch two new residency options for migrants starting in mid-2026, as part of an effort to bolster its struggling economy, which has seen negative growth in three of the last five quarters. Finance Minister Nicola Willis highlighted the crucial role that skilled and experienced migrants play in filling workforce shortages and spurring business development. The new pathways are designed for skilled workers and tradespeople/technicians, with requirements for relevant experience both abroad and in New Zealand, as well as specified salary or wage thresholds. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford stated that the initiative assists employers in retaining workers "who are already contributing to New Zealand's economy and have proven their value in their roles." Although net migration remains positive, it has decreased from the peaks following 2022, as more New Zealanders emigrate. Additionally, the government has implemented other measures to stimulate growth, including initiatives to attract foreign investment.
