Gateway (Edinburgh, Scotland)
The Gateway pool, located in the gardens of Jupiter Artland near Edinburgh, enchants visitors with its extraordinary palette. This striking art installation, complete with a terrace and elongated shape, is adorned with hand-painted colorful tiles. The Gateway pool comprises more than 11,000 tiles, each meticulously painted by the artist herself. The pool features heating for comfortable swimming. The project’s creator is artist and designer Joana Vasconcelos.
Baker Pool (Connecticut, US)
Another remarkable pool is the Baker Pool, designed by American artist James Turrell. He created this space for a family of art collectors in Connecticut. The artist composed an exclusive light installation for the Baker Pool, a mesmerizing spectacle merging water, geometric lines, and a spectrum of colored lighting.
Palm Springs (US)
Among the designers and artists who boldly play with color in pool design, Alex Proba stands out. She notes that many designers tend to overlook the pool area, which she considers a mistake, since the pool is always prominently on display. Earlier, Proba created sketches of pools with vivid geometric patterns on the floor, reminiscent of Henri Matisse's collages, and shared these projects on social media. Later, real commissions followed, to which the artist eagerly devoted herself. One such project is a pool in Palm Springs, brought to life in radiant colors.
The Godtime Hotel (Miami, US)
The elegantly understated pool at The Goodtime Hotel in Miami was crafted by designer Ken Fulk. Fulk emphasizes that the goal is to create spaces that evoke a sense of playfulness and whimsy. He is currently working on a project with two pools for a private residence in Mexico, where particular attention is given to painting the pool bottom. According to the plan, one pool will feature a female figure in the style of Jean Cocteau, while the other will display an abstract motif imitating sound waves. Additionally, for the Harthan Hotel, Fulk designed a pool where mosaic-covered tentacles appear to rise from the water, continuing onto land as built-in furniture and plant pots. Thanks to this ingenious approach, both the pool and its surrounding area look truly extraordinary.
Hollywood Roosevelt (Los Angeles, US)
Rounding out our top five most stylish pools is the creation of designer David Hockney. His signature work is the pool at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, its bottom rendered in a lace-like pattern. Hockney has painted numerous pools and took pleasure in decorating swimming areas, including his own home. The pool at the Hollywood Roosevelt is widely regarded as a benchmark of unconventional design, with the bathing area transformed into an artistic masterpiece.
